Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 9, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Storm Range application and website at
stormrange.com — operated by Brimir Clough,
a sole proprietor ("Storm Range", "we", "us", or "our") — collect, use, and share information when you
use our app and related services (the "Service").
1. The short version
Storm Range is a "local-first" application: the shooting data you create — profiles, firearms,
scopes, loads, range/DOPE logs, and similar — is stored on your own device, not on
our servers. The information we hold on our servers is limited to what is needed to provide an
account and a subscription: your phone number (for sign-in), and your subscription status.
Several features are optional and opt-in, and each one sends us something more —
cloud backup & sync, the online voice assistant, and online play in the Lobby. Section 2 says
exactly what each one sends. If you never turn them on, they never send anything.
2. Information we collect
- Account information. When you sign in, you provide your mobile phone number.
We use it to send you a one-time verification code and to identify your account. We store the
phone number and a record of your subscription tier; we never store your verification codes in
readable form.
- When you last used the app. While you are signed in, we record the time your
device last contacted our servers — a single timestamp, updated at most every few minutes. It
tells us that the app was opened, not what you did in it: the calculator and solo simulator
runs work entirely on your device and send us nothing. Signed out, or offline, nothing is
recorded.
- On-device app data. The gear, profiles, ballistic solutions, range data, and
logs you create are stored locally on your device (in the browser's storage or the app's local
database). This data is not transmitted to or stored by us unless you explicitly use a feature
that requires it.
- Subscription & payment information. Subscriptions are processed by our
payment providers (Stripe for web, and the Apple App Store or Google Play for in-app purchases).
We do not collect or store your full payment card details; we receive only your subscription
status and the identifiers needed to manage it.
- Cloud backup & sync (optional, Pro). If you turn this on, the
app data described above is uploaded to our servers so it is backed up and shared between your
devices. It stays off unless you enable it, and you can turn it off again. Photos you take in the
app are never included in sync — they stay on the device.
- Optional voice features. The voice assistant has offline modes that send us
nothing. If you choose an online mode:
- Cloud speech recognition sends a recording of what you said
— one short audio clip per utterance — to our speech-to-text provider (Deepgram)
to be turned into text, along with some of your own gear, stage and target names, which are
supplied as hints so they are recognised correctly. We do not store the audio. Selecting the
on-device recognition engine avoids this entirely.
- Command and conversation understanding sends the text of your
request to our language-model provider (Anthropic). In the conversational
assistant, that text is accompanied by a small snapshot of the current context — your active
profile summary, the stage's target list, the conditions you have spoken, and live run state —
so the reply makes sense. We do not store these exchanges.
- Spoken replies send the text to be spoken to our text-to-speech providers
(Cartesia, ElevenLabs or Smallest.ai,
depending on the voice you choose).
The ballistic calculations themselves always run on your device.
- Online play (optional). If you host or join a lobby, we store what is
needed to run it and to keep ratings honest: the lobby and who sat in it, the rifle setup you locked
in, every shot's aim and impact as the app reported it, the outcome, and your rating history for
each simulator. If you set a shooter handle, it is shown to other shooters; without one you appear
as Anonymous and cannot be found by search. A photo you upload as your avatar is shown only to
you; other shooters see a generated pattern. Your phone number is never shown to
other shooters.
- Safety reports. If you report a shooter, we receive who you reported, the
reason you chose, any note you wrote, a screenshot if you choose to attach one, and a snapshot of
what your screen showed. We keep reports
so we can act on them and recognise repeat behavior, including after the reported content is
gone. The person you report is not told who reported them. Avoiding a shooter (which keeps them out
of your lobbies and pairings) is stored as a setting on your account and is never shown to them.
- Location (optional, on request). On the Environment screen you can
tap "Use my location" to fill in the weather and the place name for where you are. Only then, your
device's coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo, a free weather service, to fetch the
current conditions and the elevation, and to BigDataCloud to turn them into a place
name; a place you type by name is sent to Open-Meteo to be looked up. We do not receive or store your location. The setting "Real weather &
location" turns this off entirely.
- Support requests. A question you send from Help → Contact support is emailed to
us with your account id, phone number and email, the message, and a screenshot if you attach one.
- Technical logs. Our servers keep limited operational logs (such as request
timestamps and error information) to operate and secure the Service. We also record usage of the
cloud voice features (for example, seconds of audio transcribed) for accounting.
3. SMS / text messaging
We send SMS text messages only for account verification and security (one-time
passcodes). These are transactional messages — we do not send marketing or
promotional text messages.
- Consent. You provide your mobile number directly in the app and tap "Send
code," which is your request and consent to receive a one-time verification code by SMS for that
sign-in. We do not buy, rent, or import phone numbers from third-party lists.
- Message frequency. A message is sent only when you initiate a sign-in
(typically one message per attempt).
- Rates. Message and data rates may apply.
- Opt-out / help. Reply STOP to opt out of further messages, or HELP for help.
Mobile information sharing. No mobile information (including your phone number and
SMS consent/opt-in) will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional
purposes. Sharing with subcontractors that support the Service — such as our SMS delivery provider
— is limited to delivering these messages. Text-messaging originator opt-in data and consent are
not shared with any third parties.
4. How we use information
- To create and secure your account and verify sign-ins.
- To provide, maintain, and improve the Service.
- To process and manage your subscription.
- To respond to support requests and communicate about your account or the Service.
- To review safety reports, and to act on accounts that break our terms.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with service providers who
help us operate the Service, and only as needed:
- Twilio — to deliver SMS verification codes.
- The Apple App Store / Google Play, and
RevenueCat (which manages in-app purchases made through the app stores) — to process
and track your subscription; Stripe, for purchases made on the web where offered.
- Deepgram — to transcribe voice audio, if you choose the cloud recognition engine.
- Anthropic — to interpret optional online voice commands and conversation.
- Cartesia, ElevenLabs and Smallest.ai — to generate
the assistant's spoken replies, depending on which voice you pick.
- Fly.io — to host the Service.
- Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud — to look up the weather, the
elevation and a place name for a location you ask about, directly from your device, only when
you ask.
- Push services — if you turn on push notifications ("New Cold Calls on
this device"), we deliver the wake-up signal through the push service your device uses: in a
browser that is its own vendor's — Google, Mozilla,
Apple, or Microsoft — and in the phone apps it is
Apple's (APNs) or Google's (FCM) notification service for
that platform. What we store is the opaque delivery address or device token minted for this
purpose; what we send through it is an empty wake
signal — never the notification's content, which your device fetches directly from us. Turning
the toggle off (or deleting your account) removes the address.
These providers act on our behalf and only for the purpose listed. We do not sell your personal
information, and we do not share it for advertising.
Some information you provide is shared with other users, because that is the point
of the feature: in the Lobby, your shooter handle, ratings, join date and the results of sim runs you
played are visible to other shooters, and a lobby you host is listed for others to join.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security
of our users and the Service.
6. Online play
Nothing you send us is end-to-end encrypted, and the app contains no encrypted messaging: there is
no chat. Everything travels to our servers over an encrypted (TLS) connection and is stored as
described above. Results and ratings from online play are kept as part of the Lobby's records while your account
exists; a rating can be corrected or voided if a sim run is found not to have been played fairly.
7. Data retention
We retain account and subscription information for as long as your account is active and as needed
to provide the Service or comply with legal obligations. Verification codes are short-lived and
single-use. On-device app data remains on your device until you delete it.
When you delete your account (section 9), everything we hold that is keyed to it is removed in a
single operation — synced data, lobby seats, sim run records, ratings, avatar, push registrations,
and the account row itself. This is immediate and cannot be undone.
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including hashing
of verification codes and session tokens and encrypted connections. No method of transmission or
storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Your choices and rights
- You can stop receiving SMS messages at any time by replying STOP.
- You can delete your on-device data from within the app.
- You can delete your account yourself, without asking us — in the app under
Settings → Delete my account, or on the web at
stormrange.com/delete-account, which needs no app and no sign-in.
Deletion removes your account and the data described in section 7.
- You can turn cloud backup & sync off, and choose an offline voice engine, at any time.
- You may request access to your account information by contacting us.
10. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal
information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the "Last updated" date above
and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
